Tunes to Freeze To: Your Winter Playlist from WXJM

By Ally Engelbrecht

Well, last Friday was December 1st, so you’ve probably already had your fill of the annual Christmas jingles that fill the public soundwaves during this time of year. In lieu of these holiday songs, the WXJM web team has concocted a versatile wintertime playlist to wrap up the semester.

Some more upbeat tunes to pick you up from the inevitable downfall during finals include “Winter” by Khalid, “Holiday” by Weezer, “Cold Cold Cold” by Cage the Elephant, and “Girl” by Jamie xx. All these songs play on our need to be dancing our buns off after sitting in the library for two weeks or dredging through the cold.

If you’re looking for tunes that more fit the feel of walking around in the cold, we included “Medicine” by Broods, “Xmas Curtain” by My Morning Jacket, and “The Beach” by The Neighbourhood. These three wintery anthems can be easily enjoyed while sitting down to study, or roaming around the neighborhood looking at the glistening lights strung about your neighbor’s porch. To get yourself to sleep after being out in the cold, “Hockey Teeth” by Bahamas, “29 #Strafford APTS” by Bon Iver, and “Bathed in Grey” by King Krule can bring an end to the night.

For those more interested in traditional holiday cheer, we of course included a little something for you. “White Winter Hymnal” by Fleet Foxes is a classic wintertime tune, still cheery but with added folk undertones you don’t always get this time of year. “Wintertime Love” by The Doors complements the tone nicely, accompanied by Glasvegas’ “A Snowflake Fell (And It Felt Like A Kiss).” For all those gleefully awaiting the return of Santa Claus, “Ho Ho Hopefully” by The Maine is probably the jolliest tune on this mix and it will definitely warm your heart.  We hope this playlist serves to wrap up the semester like a little present as well as bring some jollity to your ears.
