Our DJ of the month for November 2022 is Syd Strickland! For this blog post, we asked Syd some questions to learn more about their show:
Q: What's the name of your show?
A: Worms in Ur Brain
Q: What kind of music do you play on your show?
A: Freeform! I tend to gravitate toward a weird mixture of softrock, loudrock, chill, and folk though.
Q: What artists inspire you?
A: Slaughter Beach, Dog, Bad Brains, The Garden, Mitski, Phoebe Bridgers, Miki Matsubara
Q: What is a fun fact about you?
A: Anytime I see a whiteboard or chalkboard, I try to quickly draw a little picture of myself to leave my mark. It’s like erasable graffiti!
Q: What do you study?
A: I’m a SMAD Digital Video and Cinema major!
Q: Are you apart of any other organizations?
A: I’m a part of JMU Rocky Horror, YDSA, JMU’s Anime Club, and JMU’s Heavy Music Club.
Q: What got you into radio?
A: I’ve been a music lover all my life. My dad collects records and I got into most of the artists I love today through him. He had a reggae radio show on every Sunday called “Treat Street” through the college radio here at JMU. After hearing about that, I thought it’d be cool to leave my own mark on radio through music I’ve grown to care about over the years! He’s definitely been an inspiration to my music tastes as I’ve grown.
Q: What’s your favorite part about WXJM?
A: The togetherness of everyone involved is what attracted me in the first place. Legitimately everyone who has a show here is such a cool person, it’s hard not to want to be friends with everyone. I think that’s a really important aspect of community to have! 🙂
